The main goal of this course is to provide you with tools for immediate improvement in your pronunciation as well as a solid,
yet concise, theoretical background on Phonetics.

Who is for?
This Pronunciation and Phonetics Course is designed for students of teaching training courses, translation courses, or any student of English with at least an intermediate level of language. Of course, it is also meant for teachers and translators who would like to revise and brush up some concepts and polish their pronunciation. In any case, having a solid intermediate level of English is essential to understand the videos and material with ease. However, the level 1 course will start from zero as to what Phonetics concerns.
LEVEL 1
Contents: What will this course cover?
- Basic theoretical framework
-What RP is- An overview on Pronunciation
-IPA chart and its importance
-Speech processes and organs
- Short vowel sounds and long vowel sounds
- Diphthongs and triphthongs
- Consonants (manner and place of articulation; voice and voiceless)
- Plosives, Fricatives, Affricates, Nasals, Lateral, Glottal
- Semi vowels and approximant /r/
- Minimal pairs (confusing words differing in just one sound)
- Initiation to transcription (word and phrases)
LEVEL 2
Contents: What will this course cover?
- Silent consonants
- Homophones (same pronunciation, different spelling)
- Silent E rule
- Clear and dark lateral /l/
- Glottal T
- Latest changes on vowel sounds
- Connected Speech processes:
- Consonant + vowel- Consonant + consonant- Vowel + vowel- Assimilation- Consonant and vowel elision- Linking /r/
- Vowel schwa (Strong and weak form of words)
- Voiced and unvoiced endings for plurals and third person singular
- Further exploration into Transcription (sentence and short fragments transcription)
LEVEL 3

- Introduction to suprasegmental features
- Natural flow of speech
- Content words and structural words
- Stress and accent
- Stress and meaning (word stress and sentence stress)
- Stress in compound nouns
- Word stress and grammatical category
- Intro to Intonation and intonational phrases (IPs)
- The 3 Ts: Tonality, tonicity and tone
- Types of intonation
- Intonation in Question Tags
- Intonation in WH and Yes/No Questions
- Intonation to show mood and emotions
- Intonation in statements, exclamations, commands, lists and adverbials.
- Analysis of real spoken material
- Further exploration into Transcription (transcription + intonation)
Modality and Organization
This course on Pronunciation and Phonetics will be online (no live connections- on demand) and we will use the virtual platform Google Classroom (you will need a Gmail account).
You will find all the material organized in sections.
- Recorded videos with the teacher’s explanation and examples
- PDF docs with theory and material used in videos
- Worksheets to practise
- Audios included as part of self-practice
- Extra real material and videos suggested
- Key for self- correction
Assessment: Initial, mid-term and final assessment
- Initial pronunciation assessment: you will be asked to send a recorded short text (only once)
- Mid-term assessment will consist of 2 recordings
- Final assessment: you will be asked to send a final recording to assess improvement
Personalised detailed Feedback will be given on mid-term assessment tasks and final task (not on the initial one)
NOTE: Certification of completion will be sent to all of those who have completed all the assessment stages and shown improvement (without exception).
Certificates are issued per each level finished.
